From $140Piedra del Penol (Guatape Rock)
What it is
The Piedra del Penol is a 220-metre granite monolith rising abruptly from the lakes near Guatape, two hours from Medellin. A zigzag staircase of about 700 steps wedged into a crack in the rock climbs to a viewing tower with one of Colombia's most photographed panoramas: a maze of green islands and inlets across the El Penol-Guatape reservoir.
How to visit
Most visitors climb the rock as part of a Guatape day trip from Medellin. The 700-step ascent takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on fitness, with rest landings and snack stalls on the way up. Arrive early to avoid both queues and the strongest sun. There is a small entry fee paid at the base.
Hours & practical info
Open daily, roughly 8am to 6pm. Small entry fee at the base.
