Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

Cartagena, Colombia

What it is

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is the largest Spanish colonial fortress in the Americas, rising on the San Lazaro hill just outside the Walled City. Begun in 1657 and expanded over the next century, its sloping ramparts and a maze of defensive tunnels repelled repeated sieges. Today it is Cartagena's most visited monument and a national symbol of the city's resistance.

How to visit

Allow about an hour to climb the ramparts and explore the tunnels, longer with a guide who can explain the sieges and engineering. The hilltop has sweeping views over Cartagena and the bay. Go early or late to avoid the strongest sun, and bring water as there is little shade on the ramparts.

Hours & practical info

Open daily, roughly 8am to 6pm. Tickets sold on site.
