Monserrate

Bogota, Colombia

What it is

Monserrate is the mountain that towers over Bogota, its 3,152-metre summit crowned by a white 17th-century church and shrine. A funicular and an aerial cable car carry visitors up from the edge of La Candelaria to a viewpoint with the best panorama of the sprawling capital below, plus craft stalls and restaurants. It is both a pilgrimage site and the city's favourite lookout.

How to visit

Reach the summit by funicular or cable car from the base near La Candelaria; the fittest can also hike the trail, though altitude makes it tough. Go on a clear morning for the best views before afternoon clouds set in. Allow one to two hours at the top for the church, viewpoints and a coffee. Bring a jacket, the summit is colder and windier than the city.

Hours & practical info

Funicular and cable car run daily, roughly 6:30am to 11pm. Hours vary by day.
